Material & Build20/25
50-denier ECONYL recycled nylon ripstop with PU membrane and tricot backer bonded into a true 3-layer construction — more durable than 2.5L alternatives. 20,000mm waterproofness rating. PFC-free DWR throughout. Fair Trade Certified factory production. Minor deductions for stiffness, crinkle noise, and weight at 14.1 oz compared to ultralight alternatives.
Warranty & Support25/35
Ironclad Guarantee covers manufacturing defects for product lifetime. Patagonia operates an in-house repair center and Worn Wear resale platform with mail-in and retail drop-off options. However, wear-and-tear repairs are charged at cost. Items with 6+ holes or 3+ broken zippers are not accepted. DWR coating degrades over time and requires periodic re-treatment.

High
Three-layer construction bonds the 50D face fabric, PU membrane, and tricot backer into a single laminate — more durable and moisture-wicking than 2.5-layer alternatives where the membrane is exposed.

Known Concerns4 issues reported
Breathability is consistently rated the weakest attribute by expert testers. Even with pit zips open, heat regulation is poor during high-output activities like trail running or uphill hiking.
Fabric is notably stiff and crinkly when new, producing audible crinkling noise especially with the hood up. Softens with use but never matches thinner-fabric competitors.
DWR coating degrades over time and requires periodic re-treatment (wash + tumble dry or apply aftermarket DWR) to maintain waterproof performance.
At 14.1 oz, it is heavier than most ultralight shells. No chest pocket or interior pockets — only two external handwarmer pockets.
